Light, sound and earthquake energy all travel in wave patterns through matter. Let&#8217;s learn some basic vocabulary we use to discuss the characteristics of waves<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-content-justification-left is-layout-flex wp-container-core-buttons-is-layout-1 wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button has-custom-width wp-block-button__width-100 has-custom-font-size has-large-font-size\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link has-primary-color has-secondary-background-color has-text-color has-background has-link-color wp-element-button\" style=\"border-radius:9px;padding-top:0;padding-bottom:0\"><strong>WAVE DEFINITIONS<\/strong><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:32px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Our basic mathematical representation of a wave is in repeating &#8220;S&#8221;-like pattern as shown below. And while there are more variations to learn about, let&#8217;s start with understanding this model:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>PEAK <\/strong>(A) is the top of the wave.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>TROUGH<\/strong> (B) is the bottom of the wave.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>WAVELENGTH<\/strong> (C) is the distance from peak-to-peak or trough-to-trough.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Wavelengths can range from fractions of a millimeter to miles.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>FREQUENCY <\/strong>(D) is the number of waves that take place in 1 second and is measured in <strong>HERTZ<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>AMPLITUDE <\/strong>(E) is the height of the wave from the center to the peak or center to the <strong>AMPLITUDE <\/strong>(or height) of a sound wave determines the volume of a sound, which is measured in <strong>DECIBELS<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-6830f92d1c8ec9fc9b1dcee298589ddf\" style=\"color:#0059ff\"><strong>Higher amplitudes create louder sounds.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li <strong>photons vibrating in taller waves create brighter light<\/strong> regardless of the color.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Those vibrating in shorter height waves create dimmer style=\"color:#0059ff\">However, in terms of visible light, the <strong>Terahertz (THz) determines the color ranging from lower frequency violet to higher frequency small waves are lapping at the shore. class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>This<strong> higher amplitude wave carries more energy<\/strong> which is true of louder sounds and brighter lights too! <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lower amplitude waves, like small ripples in a glass of water, quiet sounds and dimmer light, carry less energy and are less likely to damage human
