Only 2 other countries don&#8217;t use it<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-1 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>And it&#8217;s unlikely you can name them or point them out on the globe. Liberia, a country founded by the US as a refuge for freed slaves after the Civil War, still uses our system. <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Myanmar_units_of_measurement\" title=\"\">Myanmar has its own system<\/a> unrelated to Metric or our Imperial system. Most high paying US jobs are at least partially metric<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-2 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>If you plan to get a career in medicine, engineering, automotive, making or selling things, it would be a good idea to get familiar with metric. Since most car parts aren&#8217;t made in the US, most mechanics must be well versed in metric units to fix cars. Trading of goods requires agreed upon measurement<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-3 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Trading goods is the main way countries make money. So in order to maintain the world&#8217;s largest economy, we have to make things and sell them to other countries. Most objects are labeled with metric already<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-4 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Metric units ARE the international units of trade. So oranges are bought and sold in kilograms, olive oil is bought and sold in liters and rope is bought and sold in meters. So unless an object is made and sold exclusively in the US, it&#8217;s labeled in metric and imperial units already. Most sports compete in metric<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-5 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Ever watched a track or swim meet? Well all those athletes compete in metric distances like the 100m dash and 200m freestyle. Metric is based in 10 so there are no fractions!<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Let&#8217;s be honest, no one likes fractions! So the fact that we have to add 12<sup><sub>3\/4<\/sub><\/sup>&#8221; and 22<sub><sup>5\/8<\/sup><\/sub>&#8221; to build things is so much mental math and leads to wild errors that just don&#8217;t happen when adding 12.75cm and 22.62cm.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"279\" height=\"283\" src=\"https:\/\/sciencegonnagetyou.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/Screenshot-2025-01-28-215925.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-528\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Metric uses decimals so there are no fractions!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-secondary-color\">So why haven&#8217;t American&#8217;s switched over if metric is so great?<\/mark><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We tried! The Metric Conversion Act of 1975 was supposed to send the US on a completely metric path, but it was voluntary so no one did it. Why?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. It would cost an enormous amount of money<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-8 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Conversion to metric wouldn&#8217;t just happen in classrooms. Everything that is measured would have to be recalibrated to completely different units including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>168,000 gas pumps recalibrated to LITERS<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>36,536 grocery stores with dozens of scales each recalibrated to KILOGRAMS<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>4.2 million miles of road signs dug up, remeasured and converted to KILOMETERS<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"283\" height=\"277\" src=\"https:\/\/sciencegonnagetyou.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/Screenshot-2025-01-28-215847.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-527\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Just converting these three objects would cost BILLIONS!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. The public is super resistant<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Our complicated Imperial system just doesn&#8217;t convert well to metric so Americans are confused by it. My grandpa used to proclaim that you buy lumber in 2in by 4in pieces so how in the world are you supposed to build houses in metric!?!?! Like they don&#8217;t build anything in the 192 countries!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"217\" height=\"188\" src=\"https:\/\/sciencegonnagetyou.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/Screenshot-2025-01-28-215823.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-526\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. We don&#8217;t HAVE to, for now&#8230;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-10 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>With third biggest landmass and population and the current largest economy in the world, American&#8217;s are something most companies have to get along with. But in the event any of those things changes, we might be wishing we spoke metric a little more clearly.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"341\" height=\"325\" src=\"https:\/\/sciencegonnagetyou.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/Screenshot-2025-01-28-220943.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-533\" style=\"width:263px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sciencegonnagetyou.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/Screenshot-2025-01-28-220943.png 341w, https:\/\/sciencegonnagetyou.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/Screenshot-2025-01-28-220943-300x286.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 341px) 100vw, 341px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">So long as we&#8217;re the world&#8217;s largest economy, the rest of the world will extra label in our nonsensical units.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-secondary-color\">Are there any consequences for our resistance?<\/mark><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Labeling for US is more costly with double units.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Companies are choosing to employ engineers from countries with metric background for fear of conversion errors.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Americans struggle to travel and communicate with other countries due to the measurement barrier.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">So, did I convince you to give metric a try?
